Als dirrid/styllyts arbeiten Dirk Dullmaier, Sounddesigner und Musiker aus Darmstadt, und der Künstler Stylianos Papavasiliou an Soundscapes, die durch Tapeloops und deren Verarbeitung in improvisatorischen Kontexten entstehen. Alte Bibliothekskassetten, Meditationsanleitungen von Fluggesellschaften und in Gebrauchtwarenläden gerettete kulturelle Artefakte beschwören die Vergangenheit in die Gegenwart.
Auf dem Experimance werden sie einen Einsteigerworkshop zur Erstellung eigener Bandschleifen mit (nicht mehr) handelsüblichen Musikkassetten geben und in einer Bastelsession mit anschließender Tapeloop-Orchester-Performance die Faszination der Arbeit mit den organischen Ungenauigkeiten dieses Mediums vermitteln.

As dirrid/styllyts, Dirk Dullmaier—sound designer and musician from Darmstadt—and the artist Stylianos Papavasiliou create soundscapes using tape loops and their manipulation in improvisational contexts. Old library cassettes, airline meditation guides, and other cultural artifacts salvaged from thrift stores summon the past into the present.
At Experimance, they will lead a beginner’s workshop on creating your own tape loops using (no longer) commercially available music cassettes and, in a hands-on session followed by a tape loop orchestra performance, convey the fascination of working with the organic imperfections of this medium.

Wie klingt Holz? Welche Resonanzen stecken in Metall, Beton oder Glas? Dieser Workshop lädt dazu ein, Klang jenseits klassischer Instrumente zu erforschen.

Gemeinsam bauen wir den Knattermax – einen kompakten elektronischen Apparat, mit dem sich verborgene Resonanzen unterschiedlicher Materialien hörbar machen lassen. Durch das Anregen von Oberflächen entstehen dichte Klangtexturen und kontinuierliche Töne, darunter auch Drone-Sounds.

Schritt für Schritt werden grundlegende Prinzipien einfacher elektronischer Schaltungen vermittelt, ebenso wie Löten und die Arbeit mit Holz. Im Mittelpunkt stehen jedoch das Hören, das Experimentieren und die klangliche Forschung: Wie verhalten sich Materialien in Schwingung? Wie verändert sich Klang durch Druck, Bewegung oder Oberfläche?

Der Workshop verbindet experimentelle Klangkunst, DIY-Elektronik und materialbasierte Forschung und eröffnet einen direkten, praktischen Zugang zu Klang als physisches und räumliches Phänomen.

How does wood resonate? What kind of sound lives inside metal, concrete, or glass? This workshop invites you to explore sound beyond conventional instruments.

Together, we will build the Knattermax — a compact electronic device designed to reveal the hidden resonances of different materials. By bringing surfaces into vibration, the instrument can generate rich textures and continuous tones, including deep, immersive drones.

Step by step, you will learn the basics of simple electronic circuits, soldering, and working with wood. The focus is not only on construction, but on listening, experimentation, and sonic discovery: how do materials behave when activated? How does sound change depending on surface, pressure, or movement?

The workshop connects experimental sound art, DIY electronics, and material-based research. It offers a hands-on approach to sound as a physical and spatial phenomenon.

What to expect:

No prior experience is required — just curiosity and an interest in sound, materials, and experimentation.
